YVE Director speaks at the Sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6)

At the occasion of the closing ceremony for the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) yesterday 1 March 2024 at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Our Executive Director Joe Bongay had the privilege to address multistakholders on a panel were he address them on the issue of “Plastics and Circular Economy ” exploring the concept of circular economy unveiling how Toxic chemicals make plastics incompatible with a circular economy.

In his address ,he called for immediate steps to significantly reduce the manufacturing of plastics and a fundamental shift in our materials economy to replace them with safer, sustainable materials that promote a healthy, circular economic future.

A circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design. This means materials constantly flow around a ‘closed loop’ system, rather than being used once and then discarded. In the case of plastic, this means simultaneously keeping the value of plastics in the economy, without leakage into the natural environment.
