YVE Gambia Participates in the Africa Regional Zero Waste Meeting in Tanzania

Joe Bongay , The Executive Director for Young volunteers for the Environment (YVE) The Gambia is connects with other African Civil Society Organisation Leaders in an ongoing Zero Waste Regional Meeting organised by the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), in their forthcoming GAIA Africa Regional Meeting from 08-13 October 2023 at The LandMark Mbezi Beach Resort & Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

As the UNFCC COP28 Global Climate Summit and UNEP Plastic Treaty INC3 Global Meeting is fast approaching ,the meeting aims to convene the diverse members of the GAIA network who are actively engaged in waste management projects with local governments and communities worldwide.

The ongoing meeting meeting offers the africa CSO leaders a platform for strategic discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaborative planning to further GAIA’s vision of a just, zero waste world that respects ecological boundaries, community rights, and safeguards against toxic pollution and wasteful resource disposal.

YVE Gambia believes , waste management has been a longstanding public concern due to its impact on human health, the environment and socio-economic development. The linear economy paradigm has resulted in increasing consumption of products made of virgin material and low level of recycling or reuse of important resources.

Furthermore , Director Bongay also belives as part of YVE Gambia’s Zero Waste Vision and development programmes that , emerging economies cannot harness the development opportunity that waste provides if waste remains scattered, uncollected across our environment, our towns, and cities and, if there is no incentive (political, legislative or economic) to divert waste away from dumpsites and landfills, into economically productive value chains.
