THE GAMBIA CSOs CALLS FOR AN END TO FOSSILS FUELS

Young Volunteers for the Environment (YVE Gambia) Organization in partnership with CAN International and Activist Gambia joins the Globe in demanding an end to fossil fuel through its Global fight to end fossils fuels campaign 2023. The Gambia Don’t Gas Africa Campaign commenced with an action March in the streets of North Bank Region on the Saturday, 16th September, 2023.

This September, as world leaders discuss climate action at the United Nations in New York, people on every continent will join the largest-ever globally coordinated action to demand that governments end fossil fuels.

In The Gambia, the organizations jointly mobilized diverse stakeholders through its national action call  march, community engagement , various social media activities and podcast as part of its campaign activities in The Gambia  in demanding an end to fossil fuels.

The climate crisis is escalating but so is the global movement for climate justice. We need all hands on deck to win this fight.

The  level of investment in Africa into fossil fuels cannot continue if we want to stick to 1.5 degrees of warming. It cannot continue if we want livable and sustainable African communities.

One of the most concerning aspects of new oil and gas projects in Africa is the potential for human rights abuses. Many of these projects take place in areas where local communities have little say in the decision-making process. Governments and corporations can use their power to displace communities, disrupt traditional livelihoods, and violate human rights. The Don’t Gas Africa campaign seeks to raise awareness of these issues and pressure governments and corporations to respect the rights of local communities.

YVE Gambia Participates at 11th Conference on Climate change and Development in Africa

The ELEVENTH Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-X ), held on the theme, ‘Just Transitions in Africa: Transforming Dialogue into Action,’ aims to launch a continent-wide debate on the actions required to bring about a transition that is truly just for Africa.

The Young Volunteers for the Environment (YVE) The Gambia’s boss and team , Joe Bongay are currently participating in an ongoing preparation meetings of diverse stakeholders of the 11th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa held in Nairobi, Kenya on the sideline of the African Climate Summit .

The conference is being organized by the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), in collaboration with the Government of Namibia, under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme. ClimDev-Africa is a consortium of key African development institutions, including the African Union Commission (AUC), African Development Bank (AfDB), UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).

The 11th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-XI) was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 1-2 September 2023.

CCDA-XI is an annual event of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa), an initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

It served as a pre-event of the Africa Climate Summit to be held under the theme; “African Solidarity for Global Climate Action from 4-6 September 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. It will bring together African high level policy makers, senior officials, climate change experts, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to deliberate on the sub themes of the Summit.

“Africa has taken a position that it contributes the least to global warming but is the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and therefore has special needs and special circumstances warranting financial support to mitigate against and adapt to climate change,” the organizers stress. The continent is seeking to accelerate implementation of its climate change strategies and actions to avert the catastrophic impacts of global warming and build the resilience of the continent’s economies.

Climate change is a threat to Africa’s development. According to the 2022 Climate Vulnerability Index, nine of the 10 most vulnerable countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2022 Climate Change Report confirms that West Africa, East Africa, and Central Africa are among global hotspots of human vulnerability to climate change.

Furthermore, Africa needs around $500 billion in climate finance by 2030, according to the AfDB’s Africa Economic Outlook 2022, which also estimated that the continent will need to invest more than $3 trillion in mitigation and adaptation in the same period to implement its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

CCDA–XI is expected to come up with detailed analytical, data-driven and evidence-based recommendations on the various sub themes of the Summit. Reports from the conference will contribute to the outcome statements for African Heads of State, towards and beyond the UNFCCC COP28.

The first day of the CCDA consisted of technical meetings of these expert groups, while the second day will be a High-Level segment for policy and decision-makers to review and finalize statements for the Summit.

Organized ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s Conference of Parties known as COP, the CCDA convenes different African stakeholder groups on climate change, to discuss key climate change and development opportunities and challenges for the purpose of implementing sustainable solutions for Africa to deal with climate change. The conference also elicits evidence-based and analytically grounded contributions to the African common position ahead of the COP, which this year is being hosted by the United Arab Emirates.
